Engineering Highlights

Key Features

Every Reefer Flexitank is built around three core engineering principles that set it apart from standard flexitanks.

🧪
Virgin Polyethylene
Constructed from the highest quality virgin, co-extruded polyethylene — fully compliant with food safety standards and ensuring zero contamination risk throughout transit.
☢️
Gamma Irradiation
Gamma ray sterilisation uses ionizing radiation to eliminate all microorganisms — bacteria, fungi, and parasites — by damaging their DNA. Essential for food-grade liquid cargo.
🛡️
Reinforced Bulkhead
A specially designed reinforced bulkhead system — comprising a wooden board and two foam barriers — guarantees structural stability and cargo safety throughout the entire journey.

Food Grade

Purpose-built for food safety

The Reefer Flexitank uses a unique combination of LDPE, LLDPE, and MLLDPE film layers — each selected for their food-grade compatibility and mechanical performance in refrigerated environments.

The 40' configuration uses a heavier 250 micron film specification and a reinforced ≥200 gsm outer sleeve, reflecting the greater structural demands of a larger, multi-unit container setup.

All materials comply with FDA regulations and are tested to PAAS1008:2016 standards. The 40' configuration is additionally approved to COA Code of Practice TG07 and ISO 22000 Food Safety Management.

Common Questions

Reefer Flexitank FAQ

Everything you need to know about transporting food-grade bulk liquids in refrigerated containers.

What is a Reefer Flexitank? +
A Reefer Flexitank is a food-grade flexible bulk liquid container designed specifically for use inside refrigerated (reefer) shipping containers. It allows temperature-sensitive liquids like wine, juice, and milk to be transported in bulk while maintaining a controlled cold chain throughout the journey.
What is the difference between the 20' and 40' configurations? +
The 20' Reefer Flexitank is a single unit designed for a standard 20-foot reefer container. The 40' configuration uses three separate flexitanks (each 5KL–8KL) inside a 40-foot reefer container, making it ideal for higher-volume shipments or for regions where 20-foot containers are in short supply.
What cargo types are suitable? +
Reefer Flexitanks are designed for temperature-sensitive, food-grade bulk liquids — including wine, fruit juices, milk, dairy products, and other beverages. They are not suitable for non-food or hazardous liquid cargo.
What is Gamma Irradiation and why does it matter? +
Gamma ray sterilisation is applied to the flexitank materials to eliminate all microorganisms — including bacteria, fungi, and parasites — by disrupting their DNA. This is a critical step for food-grade applications where cargo purity and contamination prevention are paramount.
How does it compare to ISO-tank containers? +
Reefer Flexitanks offer a significantly more cost-effective solution for bulk liquid transport compared to ISO-tank containers. They eliminate the cost of tank cleaning, return logistics, and depot storage, while offering 25% more payload than IBCs and 50% more than drums.
Is the optional EVOH/Aluminium barrier available on both configurations? +
The EVOH/Aluminium oxygen barrier layer is available as an optional addition on the 40' configuration and can be stitched into the flexitank construction to protect oxygen-sensitive cargo from migration, taste transfer, or odour contamination. Please enquire with our team for availability on the 20' configuration.
