4 Inner Sleeves

Tubular Co-Extruded Polyethylene

The inner layers consist of 4 sleeves of tubular, co-extruded polyethylene — the primary containment barrier for bulk liquid cargo. Each sleeve is manufactured to tight tolerances ensuring consistent wall strength and puncture resistance throughout transit.

With a maximum operating temperature of 85°C, the inner layer is suitable for a wide range of food-grade and non-hazardous chemical cargoes, including viscous liquids requiring heating during discharge.

Structural Shell

Continuous Woven Polypropylene

The outer layer is a single sleeve of continuous woven polypropylene — providing the structural strength required to withstand the pressures of a fully loaded 20ft container throughout its journey.

With tensile strength of 1,800 N/50mm (TD) and a 30 g/m² protective coating, this layer ensures the Flexitank holds its form from filling through to discharge at destination.

Proprietary Technology

Automatic Air Vent Technology

Sun Flexitanks feature built-in automatic air vent technology — a key safety and performance advantage over standard flexitanks.

💨
Automatic Pressure Release
Auto air-vents continuously release excess air pressure that builds inside the flexitank during transit — preventing deformation and stress on the outer layer.
⚖️
Balance Vent Function
Functions like a balance vent — equalising internal and external pressure without operator intervention, at any point during the shipment.
🌡️
Extreme Temperature Rated
Engineered to sustain extreme temperature conditions — from sub-zero cold chains to high-heat shipping lanes — without compromising vent performance.
🌀
Auto Air-Vent
Automatically regulates internal pressure throughout transit — no manual intervention required.

Common Questions

Flexitank FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first Flexitank shipment.

What liquids can be transported in a Flexitank? +
Sun Flexitanks are suitable for a wide range of non-hazardous bulk liquids including edible oils, glycerine, latex, fruit juices, cosmetic bases, non-hazardous chemicals, and pharmaceutical-grade liquids. They are not suitable for hazardous or flammable cargo.
What capacity configurations are available? +
Flexitanks are available from 16,000 litres up to 24,000 litres, all fitting a standard 20ft ISO shipping container. Our team will advise the best configuration based on your cargo density and volume requirements.
How does a Flexitank compare to drums and IBCs? +
A Flexitank carries 44% more payload than drums and 15% more than IBCs in the same 20ft container. It also eliminates the cost of return logistics, cleaning, and storage associated with reusable containers.
What loading and discharge options are available? +
Sun Flexitanks support three configurations: Top Load/Top Discharge, Top Load/Bottom Discharge, and Bottom Load/Bottom Discharge. The right option depends on your filling and pumping infrastructure at origin and destination.
What is the automatic air vent and why does it matter? +
The auto air-vent automatically releases excess internal air pressure that builds during transit — preventing deformation, stress on the outer layer, and potential leakage. It functions as a continuous balance vent with no manual intervention required.
Is the Flexitank insured? +
Yes — every Sun Flexitank is insured against manufacturing defects as standard. Our team can provide full insurance documentation as part of the shipment package.
