There's a version of this conversation that's purely about cost, and we've had it many times. Flexitanks carry more, cost less per litre, and eliminate the return logistics that make drums so expensive at scale. The economics are clear.

But there's another conversation worth having — one that's becoming increasingly relevant as supply chains face growing scrutiny over their environmental impact. And on that front too, flexitanks make a compelling case.

Steel drums are heavy. A standard 200-litre steel drum weighs around 20kg empty. A container load of them — typically 80 drums — adds roughly 1,600kg of packaging to every shipment, before a single litre of cargo is loaded. That's deadweight freight, with a carbon cost attached to every kilometre it travels.

A flexitank, by contrast, weighs around 30kg. One unit. For 24,000 litres of cargo.

The difference in packaging waste is even starker. Industry estimates put flexitank packaging waste at around 90% less than the equivalent drum volume. For companies tracking Scope 3 emissions or reporting against ESG frameworks, that's not a footnote — it's a meaningful reduction in the environmental footprint of every shipment.

Then there's the return journey. Drums don't disappear after discharge. They need to be cleaned, inspected, and either shipped back to origin or disposed of at destination. Both options have an environmental cost — the energy and water consumed in industrial drum cleaning, or the waste stream created by disposal. Flexitanks are single-use and fully recyclable. The lifecycle ends cleanly, without the ongoing resource consumption that drum reuse requires.

It's also worth considering what happens when drums fail in transit. Leaks, corrosion, and damage during handling are all real risks with steel drums, particularly on longer trade lanes or in high-humidity environments. A spill doesn't just mean lost cargo — it means contaminated container floors, potential port authority involvement, and waste disposal costs.
